Edgartown is a museum of whaling captains' homes within and around the village. The stately houses have been carefully maintained since the early years of the 19th century. They give the town its picturesque qualities. Also, there are many homes in Edgartown that predate the whaling era that add to the quaint atmosphere.

The beaches, fishing and yachting facilities within Edgartown are excellent. The beaches range from the calm Lighthouse Beach on the harbor near the center of town, to the moderate waves at the Joseph Sylvia Beach, to the high surf at South Beach. Bluefish and striped bass are among the favorites found here. And Edgartown has long been one of the favorite yachting centers world over.

There are numerous bike paths within the town allowing you to literally bike from one end of town to the other. Being relatively flat makes the trips easier for people of all ages.
