OAK BLUFFS TOWN HALL 56 SCHOOL STREET PO BOX 1327 OAK BLUFFS, MA 02557 508-693-3554 Office hours: 8:30 am - 4 pm Town Clerk - Deborah Ratcliff, 508-693-3554 x119 Oak Bluffs has been the focal point for annual summer gospel meetings since the early 1800's when church groups found the countryside well suited for their groups to attend long sessions. Tents were pitched where gingerbread cottages now stand surrounding the Tabernacle, a steel structure built in 1879. There is still much activity here today. In the late 1800's, a steam locomoctive made its way to Edgartown along the shoreline. President Grant was among its first passengers. The train soon gave way to the automobile when that new mode of travel became so popular. The oldest operating carousel in the country draws much attention during the summer months. The island's hospital is here in Oak Bluffs. It is a fully accredited non-profit community hospital.
